The WWF International Arctic Programme leads WWF’s work in the Arctic. It is also the "core team" designing and implementing the major WWF Network Initiative “Creating a New Future for the Arctic”, whose aim is to eliminate threats to the Arctic as a key region for the global climate system and as one of the world`s largest, most valuable and pristine natural regions, by reducing global greenhouse emissions and by promoting resilience-based management of land, sea, ecosystems and species.
In this context, WWF is hiring an experienced and ambitious person to take on the responsibilities of our Conservation Officer from mid-august during her maternity leave.
The ideal candidate has a broad understanding of arctic issues, both the ecological context (including climate change) as well as the political and social considerations in the region. Experience from conservation work – whether from an NGO, government or local perspective - is expected, as well as demonstrated project management abilities.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, motivational and inspirational skills and the ability to think and plan strategically are equally important.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- To develop and implement strategies and projects that establish "resilience building" as a core component of arctic conservation, spatial planning and ecosystem management in the Arctic.
- To act as the key liaison point and to coordinate Arctic "resilience building" work between WWF national organisations working on Arctic issues.
- To maintain a strategic overview of the opportunities for and threats to the Arctic at international, national and regional levels; and keep abreast of new trends and emerging opportunities for WWF in the area of resilience building and conservation.
- To build capacity to achieve WWF's Arctic objectives by creating strategic alliances with other international, national and regional conservation groups, industry and government.
- To work with the communications team to help prepare relevant communication materials.
- To provide support for Arctic-specific fundraising strategies and events.
- To ensure close cooperation and integration within the WWF Arctic Network Initiative.
Required Qualifications
- Masters degree in a relevant discipline, or degree and equivalent experience.
- At least 3 years post graduation work experience in a position directly relating to Arctic or Antarctic conservation or advocacy.
- Advanced knowledge of arctic conservation issues.
Further Required Skills and Competencies
- Proven ability to deliver on agreed objectives
- Proven project management, budgeting, and reporting skills
- Capacity and willingness to travel and to be able to work in Arctic regions when required
- A broad understanding of Arctic issues, particularly the ecological context including climate change.
