Bantengs prefer to roam the open and dry deciduous forests where grassy vegetation is found in abundance.

They are found scattered across Cambodia, especially in the southwest, north and northwest.

Hunting for meat and horns
Although it was considered to widespread in Mondulkiri, Kratie, Stung Treng, Rattanakiri and Preah Vihear provinces, the Banteng is still facing the threat of over-hunting for its meat and horns.

The population of Banteng has decreased dramatically in the last few decades.

Banteng trophies were reported widely on sale as illegal trade in the local markets within Cambodia and along the Thai-Cambodian border.

...as decoration
Also, they were seen hanging on walls as decorative objects in many of the households throughout the country.

These facts strongly suggest that the Banteng population has been, and remains under considerable pressure from hunters.

Diseases and parasites transmitted by domestic and feral livestock are also serious threats to its continued survival.
