Living Planet programme for Deutsche Welle Radio

Reaching 65 million listeners

The great benefit of the partnership is that we can draw on WWF's global knowledge of the critical issues facing the planet as well as hands-on insight and guidance from WWF staff on the ground.
Irene Quaile, Deutsche Welle Features Editor
Since October 2003, WWF has been involved in a successful partnership with Germany's international broadcaster, Deutsche Welle Radio, which broadcasts to an estimated 65 million listeners around the globe, with a special focus on Africa and Asia.

The partnership centres on a weekly environment programme, Living Planet, which explores how over-consumption of the Earth's natural resources is putting pressures on different ecosystems around the world.

WWF and Deutsche Welle share a belief in the need to raise awareness that sustainable development – maintaining a balance between human needs and finite natural resources – is key to alleviating poverty and protecting the environment.

Award winning work
The partnership has resulted in several feature series in recent years, including WWF Ecoregions and Indigenous Peoples - Partners in Conservation, which have won several awards in the renowned New York International Radio Festivals, including the environment silver medal in 2003, the gold in 2001, and a special United Nations gold award in 2001 for “outstanding radio programmes which best exemplify the ideals and goals of the United Nations".

The English service of Deutsche Welle RADIO broadcasts around the clock, to listeners all over the world.
