IKEA and WWF about Climate Change

IKEA and WWF have identified Climate Change as a major threat to both the environment and people. New evidence, that global climate change is real and advancing more rapidly than scientists earlier expected, has made it even more important to act.

IKEA and WWF see leadership in this field as important. IKEA, an international company with significant impact from energy and transportation aims to collaborate in existing Climate Change projects together with WWF.

By focusing on reduction of CO2-emissions through energy efficiency, renewable energy generation and sustainable transportation for people, IKEA and WWF wish to explore ways in which joint efforts can contribute to pilot projects whose experiences constitutes important input to creating successful working models for large scale emission reductions for a company like IKEA. Both organizations have decided to work together on the following focus areas:
  • Pilot projects on energy efficiency and use of renewable energy at IKEA suppliers leading to reduced energy use, reduced CO2 emissions and at the same time reduce total supply costs.
  • Pilot projects on Sustainable Transportation for People leading to reduced emissions and so as to inform future IKEA business decisions.
These measures will also help IKEA explore the actions, resources/investments needed to reach its internal target to supply all IKEA units, i.e. stores, warehouses, offices and Swedwood production units, with 100% renewable energy including heating, cooling and electricity and also to reduce the energy consumption by 25% in relative terms. These projects will also explore ways to ensure that IKEA's overall climate impact through suppliers as well as transport of goods and services are neutral or positive.
