WWF and IKEA are committed to promoting responsible forestry to secure forest resources for both present and future needs. Both organizations believe that when forest raw materials are extracted, the biological and social values of the forests must be maintained and protected.
The forest projects aim to combat illegal logging, support responsible forest management and certification, and develop and promote innovative management tools. In this way, the Partnership contributes to an increased use of responsible forest products and natural wood fibre world-wide. Examples of projects:
- Promoting the adoption of the concept of high conservation value forests (HCVFs) among governments, companies and NGOs.
- Combating illegal logging and related forest crime in Russia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
- Facilitating sustainable forest management in Bulgaria and Romania, through the implementation of landscape level demonstration activities which are linked to programmes to develop national level policy advocacy.
- Driving Responsible Forest Management in China by creating an enabling environment for responsible sourcing of wood by state and private institutions and certifiable forest certification.
- Identifying which species of rattan are produced, harvested, used and traded in Laos and Cambodia to determine the potential for developing a sustainable rattan harvesting model.
- Supporting “pioneer” certification of acacia plantations in Vietnam.
