Acacia Plantation Certification

Plantations currently supply 15-20% of global wood supply. This is projected to increase to 30% based on existing plantation areas, and potentially to 60% with new planting (FAO, 2004). Vietnam provides a good example of how plantation forestry is being utilized to fill basic material demand. There plantation cover has increased from 90,000 ha in 1976 to 2.1 million ha in 2004 and by 2020 should reach target of 37 million ha.

The main species being promoted in the tropical areas are fast growing hardwoods like Acacia spp and Eucalyptus spp as well as softwoods.

The purpose with the project is to provide information to FSC’s debate on standards for certification of plantations and achieve certification of one or more acacia plantations in Vietnam
To support certification of acacia plantations in Vietnam and also to provide lessons learned for input on world wide debate on FSC certification of plantations.
