Partnerships: SVEASKOG

WWF and Sveaskog – a powerful voice for living forests

Sveaskog, Sweden's largest forest owner, and WWF have engaged in a partnership to encourage sustainable forestry.

Together both organisations seek to promote a dialogue between Europe's environmentally responsible buyers, to create consumer awareness and to broaden the market for certified products.

Sveaskog:

  • ...is the largest owner of forest land in Sweden, with 15% of the country’s productive forest land, and aims to lead the way in promoting and cultivating forest values. The forest is the company's core business and is a leading supplier in Sweden of saw logs, pulpwood and biofuel.

  • ...contributes to long-term sustainable development by exemplary management of its forests and combining a focus on profitability with eco-responsibility. Sveaskog will provide its owner, the Swedish state, with a return on its forest assets and be a model employer and business partner.

  • ...has annual sales of approximately SEK 6 billion and some 800 employees.

  • ...has set itself ambitious targets with respect to production, the environment and nature conservation: Under Sveaskog’s environmental policy, 20% of productive forest land in each forest region in Sweden will be used for nature conservation and environment protection. The conservation measures include setting aside extensive landscapes, such as ecoparks. These are large forest landscapes in which nature conservation is the prime concern and yield demands are adapted to specific ecological and cultural values.

...and WWF share a common vision of sustainable forestry in Sweden and globally. Our Partnership for Living Forests comprises five joint long-term projects:

  1. Effect 20
  2. Sweden Forest & Trade Network
  3. Responsible Timber Trade with the Baltic States
  4. Living Forest Waters
  5. Policy Work in Europe

For more on these projects, see the Partnership for Living Forests brochure.

WWF has recognized Sveaskog’s conservation programme as a Gift to the Earth, WWF’s highest accolade for applauding a significant contribution to the protection of the living world.

We have been committed to FSC-certification for a long time and will continue to be so. FSC certification is an important part of our work and represents a conception of the role of forestry in society that we agree with.
FSC´s principles for responsible forestry stipulate that there must be a long-term profitability as well as a continuity of the social and environmental values of the forest.
