Regional Programmes: North America

Conserving forests in North America

In Canada and the US, WWF runs a substantive forest conservation programme.

WWF Canada's Forest and Trade Programme tackles conservation issues that are vital to the country and that can best be solved on a continental basis.

One programme to address many issues
The goals of the programne are to protect North America's shared species and habitats, to improve forest management and secure new protected areas through forest certification, and to help stop the illegal trade in wildlife. Working both with industry and indigenous communities, WWF Canada has made great strides towards forest certification.

Leveraging support and facilitating collaboration
The forest programme at WWF-US uses its relationships with international foundations, development banks, government agencies, and NGOs based in the U.S. to create partnerships, facilitate solutions, and leverage support that contribute to the Forests For Life targets and programs in the field.

The forest programme takes a leadership role in some of WWF's most important partnerships to achieve its forest targets, including the World Bank/WWF Forest Alliance and the Sustainable Forest Products Global Alliance.

Dealing with direct threats and cross-cutting issues
Forest programme staff at WWF-US are also addressing forest threats including illegal logging and climate change, and cross-cutting issues such as community forestry.

The programme also works to ensure that WWF's science-based focus on conservation - including the ecoregional approach - is incorporated into its programmes.
