What people say about FSC

What they say...

How FSC is viewed by those who live, work and trade with it and those who simply want to contribute to saving the world's forests.

Decision Makers and Politicians on FSC and responsible forest management

The Public Sector has a responsibility as a customer of wood products. Therefore the public sector is called upon to only utilise wood products from primary forests if they comply with the requirements of the Forest Stewardship Council Label.

Jürgen Trittin, German Minister for the Environment, 2002

Currently timber from Acre lacks a competitive edge over that of neighbouring states. FSC certification will make products from Acre competitive in both national and international markets.

Jorge Viana, Governor of the Brazilian state of Acre, 2000

I am proud that Sweden is in the forefront of FSC certification. I am convinced that FSC will continue to gain in importance as more and more people become interested in reducing the environmental impact of their consumption and lifestyle

Kjell Larsson, Sweden´s Minister of the Environment, August 23 2000

By choosing to buy FSC labelled timber here, we are making a real contribution to the protection of these forests. An approach like that of the FSC is perfectly in tune with the spirit of sustainable development, since it aims to combine economic, ecological and social imperatives in an optimum fashion

Magda Aelvoet, Belgian Federal Environment Minister, June 2002

I would also presume that a certification system supported by environmental organisations has great market value for the wood processing industry. I'm challenging you to contribute to develop competing certification systems for forestry in Norway

Ms Siri Bjerke, Norwegian Minister of the Environment, November 2000

FSC is the only label that provides guarantees on all social, ecological and economical aspects.
M. Caron, Vice-President of the Regional Council of Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France, December 2001

Forest Industry on FSC and responsible forest management

FSC brings key players to the table, giving them a voice to find solutions. Tembec will continue to stay in dialogue with environmental groups, First Nations, and other stakeholders country-wide to find common ground on forest issues such as protection of endangered forests, aboriginal rights and forestry practices.
Frank A Dottori, President and CEO, Tembec, April 4 2003

I have noticed a huge increase in awareness of environmental issues over recent years, resulting in rising sales. We can now offer our customers timber from FSC- certified, responsibly managed sources with a guaranteed provenance. For a company such as ours this can only be good news.

Joe Hilton, Managing Director, Ecomerchant, May 2003

We believe that environmental leadership is good for business, because good business isn't just about economics. It's about doing the right thing in all facets of your business and that includes making products with high integrity. It's driven by a strong internal desire to contribute to forest conservation globally and to improve the paper making value-chain.
Russell J. Horner, President and CEO, NorskeCanada, December 2003

More and more of our customers prefer timber which through the label of FSC is providing a guarantee that the timber stems from responsible forest management.
Stefan Hils, Product-Manager of Do it + Garden Migros, August 2002

All virgin wood bought by B&Q will come from forests of known location where the supplier has given us sufficient reassurance that the forest is well managed and independently certified as such. Certification must include the ability to trace the wood from the forest to the final processor with certified Chain of Custody. B&Q recognizes that FSC currently has the best available standards and certification procedures and so will only buy products certified under the FSC scheme.
B&Q - the UK's biggest home improvement retail chain, April 2001

The FSC is recognised as having the highest certification standards available today and will be given preference over other certification systems.
Mark Kauffman, Vice President of Lowe, the world´s second largest home improvement retailer, August 2000

We are interested in a global forest certification system which is credible and overall accepted. FSC is at present the only certification system that fulfils this requirement.

If other systems gain acceptance in the environmental community, we will be open to accept these also. We are gradually changing all of our timber products from uncertified to certified in all product lines including particleboard.

OBI, leading German DIY chain that runs Obi runs 336 stores in Germany and another 99 outlets in Austria, Italy, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovenia, Switzerland and China, January 2001

Companies using FSC are good for our investment and good for the environment. From today on, we will be using FSC as one of the criteria when engaging with the forest sector, in order to implement our declared responsible engagement policy.
Goef Pearson, Group Pension Manager at Sainsbury, UK Retailer, July 2000.
