Around the world we use around 1 million tonnes of paper every day. Since paper manufacture and use may also have negative impacts on the environment, it is important to understand how we can minimise them.
The WWF Paper Scorecard is the first of several tools WWF is producing to create globally-relevant guidance on responsible paper sourcing. The Scorecard will:
- help paper producers gauge their environmental risk profile.
- enable responsible paper producers to show how they minimize negative environmental impacts of the paper products they sell.
- assist in promoting responsibly produced paper products
- test the transparency of producers
- allow buyers to evaluate the environmental footprint of the papers they buy.
- measure environmental performance over time.
The Scorecards are the first user-friendly and holistic test of important environmental aspects of paper production such as:
- forest management
- efficient use of fibres
- CO2 emissions from use of fossil fuels that contribute to climate change
- pollution from chlorinated compounds
- waste
Although the ultimate goal is for producers to score well across all parameters, it is not only about coming out top in the Scorecard for a certain grade. It is also about producers being transparent and informing buyers how their paper products are impacting the environment.
