Restoration: About Forest Landscape Restoration

For ecological integrity and enhanced human wellbeing

Why is FLR so important for forests and people...

Forest Landscape Restoration offers a solution for governments, communities and companies to reverse negative trends and turn landscapes into a source of benefits for people and the environment.

Forest Landscape Restoration will...

...restore environmental functions such as:
  • preserving watersheds thereby improving water quality and quantity
  • improving and/or expanding habitats for endangered species
  • soil stabilisation

...restore benefits for people by:

  • providing products for food, medicines and raw materials, as well as stable sources of income (e.g.: fruit, nuts, rubber, rattan, etc.)
  • reducing the risk of landslides
  • providing recreation areas

...reduce the vulnerability of forests and biodiversity to threats such as climate change, pests/disease and forest fires

...address root causes of forest loss and degradation by:

  • consulting and involving local people
  • changing policies related to land use
  • replacing harmful incentives with more positive ones

Forest Landscape Restoration also involves a package of solutions, such as:

  • Natural regeneration, enrichment planting, selective logging, re-introduction of native species, fencing, and agroforestry
  • Planning with key stakeholders to identify solutions and training local communities
  • Building capacity and recognising traditional values and knowledge

Success of FLR - involving all stakeholders
Ensuring the success of FLR requires the active involvement of partners and stakeholders at every level and right from the start: governments, government aid agencies, indigenous people, local communities, NGOs, land owners and companies all have vital roles in the process.

Only with combined efforts can we increase local awareness and capacity to engage in and support Forest Landscape Restoration activities over the long term it requires, and using a range of techniques such as removing or re-directing negative policies, improving fire management methods, protecting existing fragments of forests and promoting the regeneration of natural forests.
