International agreeements and global freshwater events
Were it not for a series of international agreements, the business of conservation would be considerably more difficult than it is already.
Laws and treaties are indispensable to the enforcement of environmental regulations and principles all over the world. Not only do they set global standards, but their very presence on the world stage often persuades governments to become signatories or draw up legislation of their own.
WWF only engages a select number of treaties and global freshwater events, where it believes that it can make most progress for conservation. WWF will continue its strong partnership with the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands and continue to engage the Convention on Biological Diversity.
The organisation will also continue to follow up implementation of water related UN Millennium Development Goals and the World Summit on Sustainable Development Plan of Implementation. Finally, WWF will remain involved in other crucial international treaties and events, such as:
- Commission on Sustainable Development
- G8 Summit
- International Symposium on the Management of Large Rivers for Fisheries
- World Water Forum
- World Wetlands Day
