World Wetlands Day

Each year in February, people all around the world are celebrating the value of wetlands and making new commitments to protect this importance source of water. Wetlands contain more species per area than other habitats and their effective management is an investment for people and wildlife.

February 2 marks World Wetlands Day - the date of the signing of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea.

From Cuba to Cambodia, Australia to Africa, WWF is working with local people, NGOs, governments in the fight to safeguard millions of hectares of wetlands the world needs. Wetland ecosystems are often mistakenly undervalued but more and more governments and communities are taking action to avert the global freshwater crisis.
