Atlantic Halibut

The issue:

Atlantic flatfish flounder, halibut and sole live on or near the seafloor. True sole only occur in the Atlantic. There are occasional health alerts for summer flounder which have at times been found to contain high levels of dangerous chemicals such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs): yum!

Flatfish in the Atlantic have been heavily depleted over the last fifty years, particularly Atlantic halibut and yellowtail flounder. Again, these low-profile fellers don't stand much of a chance against the bottom-trawlers, a fishing technique that consists of ships trailing heavy nets across the ocean floor. And, up to now, management plans to rebuild stocks have not stopped the decline.

Action:

Avoid all Atlantic halibut; rather choose the MSC-certified US North Pacific halibut.

Quote:

"Atlantic halibut is overfished, which means it is caught in such high numbers that a sustainable fishery cannot be maintained by the current population size." FishOnline.org
