Plaice

The issue:

The issue is waste - tragic, unnecessary waste. The most wasteful fishing about. When plaice and sole are usually caught, half just get tossed back - but only after they've died. And they're never alone - many other species - bycatch - are also caught and killed in the process. Horrible stuff.

Action:

The best sole choice is the MSC certified Dover sole from Hastings. For plaice the best choice is probably that caught by large mesh anchor seine fisheries traditionally used in the North Sea, where bycatch of juvenile plaice and cod is significantly lower than with other methods. If the origin of the plaice or sole is uncertain, other alternatives are a different species of flatfish such as MSC-certified halibut, or a similarly flavoured whitefish such as MSC-certified pollock, hake, hoki, Pacific cod, sablefish, or mackerel icefish.

Quote:

The Marine Conservation Society has said: Supermarkets play a huge role in shaping how our fisheries and fish farms are managed. While the most responsible retailers are making an effort to remove [unsustainable] fish from their shelves, others continue to sell them. (The Independent, 1 March 2006)
