Stinky responds
Hello, ladies and gentlemen, I hear I have caused a pretty stink, which is surely a good thing if it's got people talking about fish - but, all the same I'd like to clear the air once and for all.
It seems when I called unsustainable seafood "stinky", some folks actually thought I was saying that fish smell bad!
Goodness no!
Now I know some people in the fishing industry are worried about folks thinking that fish stink, but I'm not saying that they smell at all, I'm using a figure of speech. Let me be perfectly clear about this point - I'm saying that unsustainable fishing practices stink, in the same way traffic jams stink, or flat tyres, or a hole in your boat stinks!! Get it. It's a metaphor! Jeezz.
I’ve also been accused of spreading an anti-seafood message.
Not at all! I love seafood, and I want it to be around for future generations to enjoy. I'm actually pro-seafood, after all I am a fish! That's why I'm saying don’t support destructive fishing practices that are driving species to extinction (did you ever try eating an extinct fish - it's impossible). The best way to be pro-seafood is buying fish that are caught by responsible fishers using sustainable practices.
And then there's been noise about whether I think all fish are unsustainable unless they carry the MSC label.
Look, the important thing is buying sustainable seafood. The MSC label is one easy way to know that the fish you’re buying is sustainable and comes from a well-managed fishery. Of course there are other good fish out there.
I’ve also got seafood guides for many countries on my website to help you get smart with your seafood and make the right choices.
So, I've decided not to re-release the video 'cause it's detracting from what is really important and what I'm trying to let you all know about, and that is:
It's not the fish that stink, it's destructive fishing practices!
Choose seafood that's good for you and the oceans and look out for the MSC label.
Thank you and farewell.
