Bycatch Solutions Database
Fishing gear can often be modified to reduce bycatch.
Escape panels in nets, for example, can allow undersized fish to escape trawl capture. Fishermen, fishing gear technologists, and scientists are continually experimenting with various designs aimed at reducing bycatch yet all too often these innovations fail to be widely adopted. Technical solutions must therefore be seen as a critical element of plans to reduce bycatch worldwide.
Check out our database of bycatch solutions – listing and illustrating over 80 different modifications in use all around the world to reduce bycatch for 16 different gear types. The database is searchable by gear, bycatch type, and region/target species!
