Many of the most pressing challenges facing the world - including those which are of central concern to WWF - can be addressed in part through the rules governing international trade. For this reason, WWF has worked on trade policy for more than a decade.
 

New WTO rules that support healthy fisheries and sustainable trade are within reach... but will governments really come home with their nets full?

Wednesday, 14 December
The UNEP/WWF high level event: Building Momentum on Fishing Subsidies at the WTO will take place at the HKCEC, Press Centre, Theater I, 11:00 to 11:45. The WTO ministerial meeting in Hong Kong presents a critical opportunity to build political momentum towards success at the current WTO fishing subsidies negotiations. Ministers will make brief statements in support of WTO fishing subsidy rules that help combat over fishing while supporting trade and sustainable development.

Thursday, 15 December
The UNEP/WWF side event: Fisheries Subsidies Disciplines in the WTO: Challenges and Opportunities will take place at the NGO Center, 10:00 to 13:00.  A panel discussion on the challenges and opportunities in crafting WTO rules on fisheries subsidies that effectively combat overfishing and promote sustainable development.
