Sustainability assessment: background

Heavy development for tourism infrastructure in La Grande Motte by the Mediterranean sea in summer, France

WWF has been active in the development of work on Sustainability Assessment (SA) since 1999. Initial work included case studies exploring the impacts of liberalisation on corn production in Mexico, and a preliminary assessment of the environmental and social effects of trade in tourism.

In March 2000, in collaboration with FFLA, WWF organised the first major international multistakeholder meeting on SA in Quito, Ecuador - The International Experts Meeting on Sustainability Assessment of Trade Liberalisation (PDF: 610 KB).

Building on the success of this meeting, in January 2001 WWF launched a three-year project on SA which aimed to encourage governments to institutionalise SA, build capacity, and strengthen the experience and practical application of SA through case studies.
