Sustainability assessment: monitoring progress

WWF's Three-Year Project on SA (Jan 2001 - Dec 2003)

WWF's Sustainability Assessment (SA) project was a joint effort being undertaken by WWF International and WWF US, between January 2001 and December 2003. Throughout the project, progress towards achieving these goals was monitored and presented in a series of technical reports.

The SA project had the following goals:

  • Institutionalise SA by encouraging national governments to adopt and implement politically effective stakeholder-oriented sustainability assessment processes.
Activities related to this goal encourage national governments to adopt and implement politically effective stakeholder-oriented sustainability assessment processes.
This included providing review and commentary on government led methodologies concerning their trade policy and their efforts to undertake SAs.

  • Build Capacity and Conduct Advocacy by increasing local capacity for stakeholders to undertake, participate and advocate the use and promotion of SAa.

Activities related to this goal focus on building capacity and raising awareness to promote dialogue on SAs with an emphasis on countries and regions where WWF works with partners. This included a focus on disseminating information and organising and participating in seminars with networks of NGOs and with government to encourage dialogue on SAs of key processes including EU trade policy, the WTO and the FTAA.

  • Strengthen Analysis and Practical Application by encouraging and promoting appropriate trade reform by developing strong fact-based arguments founded on sustainability assessments through both analysis and case studies.

Major activities related to this goal involved the development of case studies with the aim of achieving a better understanding of the environmental and social impacts of trade and trade liberalisation policies in key sectors and using the results, to initiate trade policy reforms in favour of sustainable development.

The initial focus was on two case studies: Sustainability Assessment of Export-Led Growth in Soy Production in Brazil and Sustainability Assessment of the Live-reef Fish for Food Industry in the Philippines.
