Orangutans - Population & Distribution
Major decline of population over the last 100 years
Previous Population and DistributionPleistocene fossil records in southern China, northern Viet Nam, Laos, and Java indicate that the genus once had a wider distribution in the region.
Current Population and Distribution
Orangutans are now only found on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra in south-east Asia. Because of the dense forest in the species habitat, it is difficult to estimate with precision population sizes. In Borneo, orangutan populations are estimated to total about 55,000 individuals. In Sumatra, the estimate is approximately 7,500.
