IUCN/SSC AfESG Human Elephant Conflict Working Group
Working to understand the issues and pass the knowledge on
The Human-Elephant Conflict Working Group (HECWG) was formed in 1997 to try and:
- Understand HEC measures
- Identify mitigating measures
- Collect standardised data to quantify human elephant conflict (HEC) events
- Assess the impact of HEC mitigation measures
- What factors determine HEC occurrence
Created by the IUCN African Elephant Specialist Group (AfESG) it officially inaugurated a five-member Human-Elephant Conflict Working Group:
- Richard Hoare (Chair)
- Loki Osborn
- Cécé Papa Condé
- Patrick Omondi, and
- Moses Kofi Sam.
The HECWG's role is essentially one of 'technical facilitation' revolving around three activities:
- Linking people with an interest in, and co-ordinating activities with respect to HEC
- Fulfilling a catalytic role in getting HEC related studies underway
- Providing technical advice and expertise to elephant range state governments or other conservation support agencies on the management of HEC
