Viewed from afar, the elephant commands the affection of many people around the world. Lovable. Perhaps cute. Undoubtedly intelligent. For the majority of this planet's human inhabitants they are creatures to be admired and cherished. 

However, put some of these great grey goliaths next to your house, where they could not only rob you of your food, your livelihood and possibly your life, and attitudes swiftly change. Almost without exception, elephants inspire animosity and above all fear in those who share their land with them.
