Sustainable use of natural resources

The project of WWF Finland in Mangochi Region, Malawi, protects wildlife and promotes sustainable use of natural resources in ways that benefit local communties as well.




The project consists of the following parts:

  • Fish conservation to save the rapidly declining fish populations in Lake Malawi
  • Rhino sanctuary, the place where the black rhino has been reintroduced
  • Fuel briquettes, an alternative to firewood and income for local people
  • Papermaking for environmental education, and also income for local people
  • Art school, drawing animals and learning about nature conservation
  • Education centres for Malawian schoolchildren and adults, as well as for tourists
  • Friendship of schools, a correspondence between Finnish and Malawian schoolchildren
  • Ecotourism, an environmentally sustainable way of bringing in tourists
