Lethal Removal
Lethal removal may often be the only way to deal with predators, elephants, and crocodiles that repeatedly cause problems and/or kill humans. In some cases it is possible to offer identified problem animals to trophy hunters so that the local community can gain some income from animal killed. Esterhuizen (Pers. Comm.) suggests that a small number of lions could be put on trophy quotas in problem "hotspots" where lions frequently kill livestock.
However for lethal removal to work effectively, the authority for identifying and removing problem animals must be decentralised to the local level (i.e. the conservancy.) This is crucial to enable a quick reaction in the field and to ensure the correct animals is removed.
