Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife Regional Marine Ecologist Dr Ronel Nel is the current Manager of the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park Turtle Monitoring Programme. Dr Nel represents one third of an incredibly successful partnership that has enabled this project to grow from strength to strength over more than 40 years.
Like many successful conservation projects around the world, this one is built on a collaborative approach to conservation involving Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife (and before them, the Natal Parks Board), the local community, and WWF.For many years, before Dr Nel took over management responsibility, Dr George Hughes was the face of the Project, having been the initiator way back in 1963.
Total dedication and complete commitment
The formula for success has been the cooperative approach and common commitment to the longevity and objectives of the project displayed by the KwaZulu Natal conservation agencies, the local people and WWF.
Whilst Dr Nel and her colleagues have provided the leadership, management and scientific rigour, WWF has provided much-needed funds, other support, and increasingly encouraging the development of the Project into sustainable community-based natural resource management.
In need of more fundsDr Nel recently hailed the importance of WWF funds to maintain key aspects of the Programme, including supporting the monitors and associated ongoing operational activities, such as the expansion of the Programme into new areas - such as sustainability and alternative livelihoods for local people.
