The Rwenzori Massif is at the heart of the Albertine Rift Mountain Ecoregion, one of the priority ecoregions for the WWF Network.

The Albertine Rift, together with the East African Rift Lakes, has recently been confirmed as one of the 35 priority places by the WWF Network.

Because of the importance of the Rwenzori massif, WWF has developed 2 special projects aiming at ensuring long-term protection of  the habitats and species found in this region.

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the Virunga Environmental Programme (PEVi) has been operational in and around Rwenzori since the mid-1990s. The PEVi programme is funded by Sida, UNESCO, the EU and USAID.

In Uganda, WWF was operational from 1991 to 1997, resuming its work there in 2004 through the Rwenzori Mountains Conservation and Environment Management Programme. The programme is funded by NORAD.
