Working for the future of the Kafue Flats
Supporting and investing in the Flats
Since 1998, the WWF-Zambia Partners for Wetlands Programme in the Kafue Flats has been supporting efforts to improve conservation in the region.

The Partners for Wetlands approach supports and encourages people and businesses to invest in the sustainable use and conservation of these globally significant wetlands.
Wise use of wetlands
In Zambia, the Programme’s main focus is to persuade traditionally non-conservation oriented sectors represented in the Flats to adopt wise use of wetlands such as nature conservation, into their own business activities.
The Programme has made major inroads in several key areas, namely:
- providing support to strengthen existing protected areas and encouraging the establishment of new conservation areas on community and privately-owned land;
- promoting innovative approaches to improve water quality;
- supporting the development of low-impact tourism as a means of generating economic benefits for the local community and maintenance of protected areas; and finally,
- working with the Zambian government authorities and other key stakeholders to advance integrated water resource management in the Flats.
