Real Africa Safaris
Since June 2000, Real Africa Safaris has been devoting its energies to the rehabilitating Blue Lagoon National Park in order to strengthen its conservation role and to develop its substantial tourism value.After signing a partnership agreement with WWF Zambia, the company has invested in improving infrastructure: upgrading roads, resurfacing the airstrip, delineating the boundary and re-constructing the Park’s lodges and bushcamps.
Further investments have been made on training and equipping of park protection unit to check poaching activities.
Star of Africa
Star of Africa signed an initial Memorandum of Understanding with the Zambian Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) to rehabilitate infrastructure and develop tourism at Lochinvar National Park in August 2001.
A further agreement was signed with WWF in December 2001 to uphold the principles of sustainable tourism such as ensuring benefits to nature and local communities.
In addition to improving infrastructure, a tented camp has been constructed near the Chunga Lagoon and the Park has begun to host visitors. In 2003, all three parties have reasserted their commitment to work together to ensure that Lochinvar Park becomes a dynamic protected area both for conservation and sustainable tourism.
People of Mwanachingwala chiefdom
Chief Mwanachingwala represents the interests of some 60,000 subjects who have contributed approximately 40,000 hectares of community land to the Conservation Area authority.
This is the most substantial land contribution to the 55,000 hectare Mwanachingwala Conservation Area and provides a powerful impetus to this community-owned protected area being established through a partnership involving local people, the commercial farms of Mazabuka and WWF.
Local people have provided labour and logistic support to the MCA’s activities which have thus far included the delineation and protection of the conservation area, the development of game farming and tourism and the re-introduction of native wildlife.
Ceres Farms
Ceres Farms is one of the five commercial farms in Mazabuka that have entered into a partnership to establish the Mwanachingwala Conservation Area (MCA) in 2001.
In addition to 1,400 hectares placed under the MCA authority, Ceres Farms has contributed labour, equipment, logistical support, materials and fuel towards the initiative. Ceres Farms have also contributed to the costs of restocking the conservancy with game in August 2003.
Nanga Farms
Nanga Farms entered into a partnership agreement to establish the Mwanachingwala Conservation Area in 2001 with a contribution of 5,000 hectares to be placed under the MCA authority.
To the activities of delineating the boundary, sustainable use zones and the development of infrastructure Nanga Farms have contributed labour, equipment, logistical support, materials and fuel. Nanga Farms also contributed to reintroduction of game to the conservancy in August 2003.
Zambia Sugar Plc
One of the commercial farms represented in the partnership with WWF and the local community to establish Mwanachingwala Conservation Area in June 2001, Zambia Sugar has contributed 3,000 hectares to the conservancy authority.
Zambia Sugar has also contributed to the development of infrastructure in the MCA with labour, equipment, logistic support, materials and fuel. For the August 2003 reintroduction of game, Zambia Sugar contributed works worth US$10,000.
The company has also demonstrated its commitment to the local community by grading community roads.
In order to reduce water consumption and improve water quality in the waterways, Zambia Sugar has actively implemented a discharge water recycling system in its plantation.
Zambezi Ranching and Cropping Company
Zambezi Ranching and Cropping is one of the five commercial farms in Mazabuka to have committed in 2001 to the establishment of Mwanachingwala Conservation Area together with WWF-Zambia and the Mwanachingwala community.
Approximately 1,500 hectares of its lands have been placed under the MCA authority.
Zambezi Ranching and Cropping intends to develop sustainable revenue earning ventures in the conservancy and have pledged material assistance to the operation of the conservancy. The company contributed 40 impala to the restocking of game in the MCA undertaken in August 2003.
Pinkney and Bignell Farms
Pinkney and Bignell Farms is one of the partners involved in the establishment of Mwanachingwala Conservation Area which will be used for wildlife protection, game farming and have other sustainable use zones.
The Farm has contributed approximately 1,500 hectares to MCA authority.
Pinkney and Bignell intends to develop sustainable revenue earning ventures in the conservancy and have pledged material assistance to the operation of the conservancy.
