Projects: Bukit Barisan Selatan
Conservation challenges
- Poaching and habitat encroachment are very serious problems threatening Sumatran rhinos, elephants, and tigers in BBS
- Many areas are degraded and increasingly prone to fragmentation
WWF Achievements to Date
- Digital base map of BBS and its boundaries is almost complete
- Preliminary data on distribution of neighboring villages, forest types, human encroachment, as well as rhino, elephant, and other large mammal distributions have been collected
- Stakeholder consultations in Tanggamus and Lampung Barat districts and socio-economic surveys for 17 neighboring villages have been conducted. This information is used to develop new options for sustainable livelihoods for local people
- Well-equipped and trained Rhino Protection Units are maintaining patrols in key parts of the park
