Amphibians

Bongon whipping frog. East Sabah. Borneo. Malaysia.

Toads nearly the size of a football?

Business as usual in the Heart of Borneo, where the giant river toad has its home. At the other end of the range is the tiny bush frog, a few centimetres in length. Nearly 150 other species of frogs are found between these two extremes, the majority of them found nowhere else in the world.

New frog species are still being found up to this day. The discovery of the Bornean flat-headed frog in the middle of the Kapuas River basin some years ago was quite spectacular, since this species represented a family of frogs previously unknown from Borneo.

But this species may be lost before it is well observed. The area where it occurs is now highly disturbed due to illegal gold mining.
