Some 160 snake species are found in Borneo (few are venomous), while in the peat-swamp forests lolls the false gharial, a medium-sized crocodile with a long-narrow nose that has an apple-like bulb at the end. Being a fish-eater, it is harmless to people.
Borneo also harbours many turtle species, several of which are considered endangered, tortoises, freshwater terrapins, sea turtles and lizards.
