BP's independent panel has highlighted the unwillingness of BTOAS, the Turkish contractor to meet environmental standards.
A BP contractor also exposed the deficient procurement controls in the UK's Sunday Times. A deal to supply inadequate anti-corrosion coating for the pipeline means that sections already buried will not have adequate protection in the long term.
Unless they are dug up and changed, leaks will be inevitable.
Exhausted dialogue
WWF has exhausted dialogue options with BP on this project at present.
- BP needs to acknowledge the mistakes it has made before sensible discussions can progress.
- BTC has not even tackled the most difficult sections and it is already grinding to a halt.
- BP shareholders should be aware of the failure of BP to listen to its stakeholders in this case.
- They should no longer consider they are investing in best practice and should question the risk management procedures of BP.
