1. Grantee: Bombay Natural History Society
Project: Strengthening civil society networks for site conservation in the North Bank Landscape
Amount: USD 114,500
Duration: 2.5 years (2008 - 2010)
Expanding and boosting grassroots networks in 8 Key Biodiversity Areas in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, and assisting them to engage in conservation of the key sites is the aim of this project.
2. Grantee: Dolphin Foundation
Project: Integrated approach to enhance protection of Manas Tiger Reserve Amount: USD 87,300
Duration: 2 years (2008–2009)
This project aims to reduce threats such as habitat loss, degradation, and fragmentation resulting from over-harvesting of natural resources by local communities in the fringe area of Manas Tiger Reserve. Community-based organizations will be mobilized, an education and awareness program developed and sustainable natural resource based enterprises will be supported.
3. Grantee: World Wide Fund for Nature - India
Project: Maintain and restore habitat connectivity and reduce human-animal conflict in the North Bank Landscape
Amount: USD 80,800
Duration: 2 years (2007 – 2009)
Linkages across two corridors for elephant movement will be secured to conserve elephant, tiger, and rhino. The project aims to mitigate human-wildlife conflict in two corridors that are critical passageways for elephants. Community dynamics, land use, and elephant movements will be studied and a conservation action plan developed in consultation with stakeholders.
4.Grantee: Voluntary Health Association of Sikkim
Project: Building civil society capacity for biodiversity conservation with special focus on livelihood, sanitation, and health development
Amount: USD 80,000
Duration: 2.5 years (2008 - 2010)
The project will help increase participation of civil society groups in conservation and management of locally important, threatened and rare medicinal plants in the Varsay area of the Kanchenjunga Landscape, Sikkim.
5. Grantee: Aaranyak
Project: Identification and strengthening of key habitat linkages in Manas Tiger Reserve using geo-spatial technology and policy advocacy
Amount: USD 80,000
Duration: 2 years (2008 – 2009)
Ensuring that local stakeholders and forest managers effectively manage the Manas Tiger Reserve through science-based conservation tools and wider community consultations is the focus of the project. A comprehensive GIS-based biodiversity information database accessible to the public will be developed and potential habitat connectivity identified in the Reserve.
6. Grantee: Darjeeling Ladenla Road Prerna
Project: Strengthening civil society for improved resource management
Amount: USD 60,000
Duration: 3 years (2008 - 2010)
The project’s goal is to organize and support communities in the fringe areas of the Singalila National Park to conserve local biodiversity by promoting sustainable resource use practices. A system to share skills and knowledge about these practices amongst the communities will be established.
