The Greater Mekong was originally defined as an economic subregion in 1992 by the Asian Development Bank when Cambodia, China, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam entered into an agreement of economic cooperation.

Geographically the area is centered around the Mekong River Basin, which begins on the vast Tibetan Platueau in China and ends at the Mekong Delta in southern Vietnam.
