From the tropical evergreen forests that shroud the mountains of Vietnam and Lao PDR to the flat-flooded forests and the dry open woodlands in Cambodia, the forests of the Greater Mekong region consist of four of the world's most important ecoregions.

This natural wealth is threatened by large-scale logging, hydroelectric development, and the pressures of an impoverished population, which, combined, have dramatically reduced the forest canopy.

Home to a diverse range of precious plants and animals, the protection of the forests in the Greater Mekong is essential for the planet's diversity.

What WWF is doing

The WWF Greater Mekong Programme is assisting with the management of protected areas, promoting sustainable forestry practices and encouraging the participation of local people, so that they benefit from the conservation of forest resources.

Learn more about WWF's work in the Greater Annamite Ecoregion and the Lower Mekong Dry Forests, two key ecoregions of the Greater Mekong.
