Bali Barat Photo story

Five a.m. We're boarding the National Park patrol boat, courtesy of WWF, to scout the Park waters for illegal fishers.

Iwan, WWF Bali Barat Project leader (left), and Wawan, National Park guard, look out for boats in the Park Core Zone
Putu, a local guide who joins the patrols, spots a jukung fishing boat.
Hailed over, the fishers approach
You are in the core zone, calls out Wayan, this area is off limits. What are you looking for?
Wayan boards the jukung and inspects the catch. Only deep water fish are there, which means these fishers have not taken anything from the Core Zone, where the waters are shallow.
I did not know this zone was off limits, argues the fisher to the left. But Wayan points out that he has already interecepted and warned him many times before.
The patrol boat heads back to the harbour as the sun rises
