On the Ground in Ujung Kulon: the project

Local fare: rhino carvings by the WWF-assisted community group

A palette of activities

Research. Protection. Empowerment. These are some of the keywords that define the work of WWF in Ujung Kulon. There, the project aims to help improve the protection and management of the Park, and to train field staff responsible for regularly monitoring the rhino population.

Helping build better lives
The project is also attempting to help establish an effective buffer zone along the park's eastern boundary, by introducing community development projects to provide local people with income alternatives that do not depend on the park for wood and agricultural land, and by assisting in the provision of guard posts for park staff and better community-based patrolling.

Protection of the rhino population in Ujung Kulon has been the bulk of the conservation work since the project began. While the efforts have expanded over recent years to include community development, rhino research and monitoring still represent an important part of the overall programme.

Activities
WWF Indonesia has designed a comprehensive approach to resolve the problems facing Javan rhinos and Ujung Kulon as a protected area.
