Green Turtles project: How You Can Help

Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas) coming ashore to lay eggs in Turtle Islands National Park, Malaysia.

The turtles need you!

You can help, right from where you are sitting now, or you can take a hop and a jump and make your way to Ma'Daerah.

Adopt a turtle
Help save Ma'Daerah's turtles by adopting one. For only RM 150.00, you will not only become the proud parent of a green turtle, you will also receive a turtle adoption certificate, information about your protégé, and a specially designed Ma' Daerah Turtle Sanctuary t-shirt. If you adopt 5 or more turtles, you get a beautiful brass turtle carved by a renowned Terengganu craftsman.

Adopt a nest
Take a whole family under your wing and adopt a nest for only RM 100.00. In return for your support, you will be informed about the development of your adopted nest(s), receive a certificate of adoption and a specially designed t-shirt.

You will also be invited to come to Ma'Daerah to witness your hatchlings heading for the surf. If you adopt 10 or more nests, you will receive a beautiful brass turtle carved by a renowned Terengganu craftsman.

Volunteer on the beach
Volunteers help the Department of Fisheries staff to monitor nesting female turtles, manage the hatchery and carry out research. At night, they patrol the beach to deter poachers and find both nests and females. They tag and measure mothers after they finish laying their eggs, and relocate the nests to the Sanctuary.

During hatching season, volunteers monitor babies and collect un-hatched eggs. Daytime activities include cleaning up the beach and replanting native vegetation. To volunteer, contact Rahayu Zulkifli.

Partners in conservation
All the work involving the community interest group carried out by WWF Malaysia is done in partnership with the Department of Fisheries, Malaysia, with the support of British Petroleum Amoco. Maybe your company would also like to link arms with WWF and further conservation in your country and around the globe.

Spread the word
Now you know that turtles are in danger of extinction, tell your entourage. No matter which country you are in right now, there is a fair chance that people do not realise the damage they do if by throwing rubbish into the ocean or buying curios or food made from turtles. You do, so tell your friends!
