Non Formal Education
Improving Agharias in TAL
In the past, trees were randomly cut for use in irrigation dams but thanks to conservation education efforts, there are new changes in the old Agharia system.
A workshop to educate 'Agharias' about the harmful effect of traditional practices and to orient them on the alternative 'silvi' method met with success. Now 'Agharias' only cut trees that are dead or diseased.
Gothala Education to minimize Forest Fire
Cattle herders or gothalas often unknowingly destroy wildlife habitat by careless gestures like throwing away burning matchsticks and cigarette butts while grazing their cattle in the forest.
They also make a sport of killing birds with catapults. The Gothala Education drive brought about some positive changes. In TAL, the gothalas are more aware and responsible for their activities in the forest and a voluntary catapult collection program registered a corresponding decline in the birds being killed.
