Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 8th May 2008: Jumeirah English Speaking School (JESS) has donated AED 15,000 to EWS-WWF to go towards the HSBC Wadi Wurayah project. The donation will be used to purchase camera traps, which will be installed in Wadi Wurayah, with the hope to capture wildlife in the area, including the endangered Arabian Leopard, and the Endemic Arabian Tahr which exists in UAE and Oman only.

Razan Al Mubarak, Managing Director of EWS-WWF stated; “We are extremely touched by the children’s efforts and generosity in showing their care and concern for the environment. It is reassuring to know that Dubai's children are taking steps to tackle environmental degradation and to help shape a better future for everyone.”

“Wadi Wurayah in Fujairah is a unique and very important place as one of the largest natural water source in the UAE. Endangered animals still exist there, like the endemic Arabian Tahr, Mountain Gazelle, Blanford’s Fox, the Caracal and the Arabian Leopard, Rare plants also grow in the area. Wadi Wurayah also has some interesting historical and archaeological sites.”

The donation comes after JESS undertook a fund raising programme within the school to raise awareness surrounding the benefits of recycling and environmental conservation. The programme succeeded in raising a total of AED 48,000.

“As a strong supporter of sustainable development, we at HSBC are committed to supporting environmental initiatives through donations and staff participation. In our third year of partnership with WWF for the conservation of Wadi Wuraya natural habitat, we are proud to see increasing enthusiasm and participation from our staff in this project. They were recently involved in a Wadi cleaning activity and will further assist JESS students in identifying traps and installing cameras to help with the research,” said Kaltham Al Koheji, Regional Head of Communications, and Chairperson of HSBC in the Community Middle East Foundation.
