Carpathians/Forests and Protected Areas

In harmony with the WWF Danube-Carpathian Programme vision, the goals of the Carpathians/Forests and Protected Areas Programme are:

  • to maintain and preserve the area of old growth and natural forests in the Danube-Carpathian region
  • to enhance the ecological, social and economic functions of forests

WWF Danube-Carpathian programme achieves this by:

  • promoting sustainable forest management practices
  • improving the management of existing protected areas
  • lobbying for the establishment of new protected areas and supporting the effective implementation of the EU Natura 2000 legislation in the region
  • developing and implementing projects in priority areas in the Carpathians, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia and Ukraine.
