Freshwater work in the Danube-Carpathian region

In harmony with the WWF Danube-Carpathian Programme vision, the goals of the Freshwater Programme are that:
- the Danube River Basin is an international example of best practice in integrated river basin management (IRBM) policy.
- governments, management authorities, NGOs and key professional groups in four Danube sub-basins have the capacity to play a positive role in implementing IRBM legislation and policies.
- field projects being implemented by WWF or its partners in four Danube sub-basins demonstrate how improved management of freshwater ecosystems can contribute to improvements in both biodiversity and people’s quality of life.
- threats to the ecological viability of the Danube River Basin as a whole, and to high priority freshwater ecosystems within the River Basin, are eliminated or minimized.
In addition to basin-wide policy and capacity-building actions, the four sub-basins on which the WWF Danube-Carpathian Programme focuses its efforts are:
- Lower Danube and Danube Delta
Romania , Bulgaria , Moldova and Ukraine - Morava sub-basin
Czech Republic , Slovakia and Austria - Drava sub-basin
Italy, Austria, Slovenia , Croatia and Hungary - Tisza sub-basin
Ukraine, Romania, Slovakia , Hungary and Serbia & Montenegro
