Land of humpback whales and butterflies

Colombia is located on the Northwest side of South America and borders the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean. Colombia neighbours Ecuador, Peru, Panama, Brazil, and Venezuela and holds a population of 40 million.

Colombia is the fourth largest country in South America and one of the world's most important countries for the conservation of biological diversity. 33% of its flora and 12% of its terrestrial vertebrates are not found anywhere else on Earth.

World's largest variety of butterflies
Colombia has a rich array of birds, orchids, reptiles, primates, marine species, and the world's largest variety of butterflies. Fourteen of the Global 200 ecoregions - regions identified by the WWF as globally important and in need of immediate conservation - fall within Colombian territory. Currently WWF is focusing its work in 2 of those ecoregions: Northern Andean Montane Forests, and the Choco-Darien Moist Forests.

Key migrating site for the humpback whale
Colombia has coastlines on the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans, and both coasts are home to a great diversity of ecosystems, from coral reefs, coastal lagoons, and mangroves to estuaries and coastal tropical rainforests. Colombian waters are a key site for some marine migratory species such as the humpback whale that migrates each year from the Antarctic to the Pacific.
