WWF in Central America - Ecotourism

Bottle-nosed dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), Bahia Islands, Honduras.

WWF Central America is developing mechanisms to promote environmental standards in the tourism industry.

Initiatives tend to:
  • Encourage the use of environmental standards for hotel chains and tour operators in the Mesoamerican Reef, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama.
  • Protect endangered species from uncontrolled tourism.
  • Develop alliances between cruise line industries to adopt responsible tourism practices.
  • Develop alliances with government representatives and other organizations to search for a balance between conservation and the business opportunity that tourism represents for hundreds of families.
