WWF's work in Central America
For over 15 years, WWF has maintained a presence and built respect as one of the leading conservation organizations of the region. Our projects search for the conservation of biodiversity in key ecoregions, regions identified by WWF as globally important and in need of immediate conservation.
These areas maintain the ecological functionality of Central America's natural corridor and sustain the region's social and economic development. This is why main activities are focused on the Mesoamerican Reef ecoregion.
Other projects focus on training and social communications activities to support the consolidation of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor, payment for environmental services for freshwater conservation, protection of endangered species like marine turtles, caimans and jaguars, fisheries management, community-based forest management, indigenous education on High Conservation Value Forests, and FSC certification.
The promotion of best management practices in tourism and agriculture to reduce threats on fragile ecosystems are more recent activities under the scope of WWF Central America.WWF Central America works in the following areas:
