The forest types of the Valdivian Ecoregion, Chile

Evergreen forest in the Valdivian Ecoregion

The Valdivian Forests

The forests of the Valdivian ecoregion are extremely diverse thanks to the wide range of latitudes, altitudes, climate and soil conditions over which they are found.

They have also become diverse due to the prolonged period of evolutionary isolation experienced by the ecoregion.

The forest types here vary from conifer-dominated alerce (Fitzroya cupressoides) and araucaria or monkey puzzle tree (Araucaria araucana), to deciduous roble (Nothofagus obliqua) and coïgue (Nothofagus dombeyii).

We hope that the descriptions in this section will help you to distinguish between these forest types and, above all, to appreciate the importance of their conservation.
