Priorities

Sixty-nine priority areas of great biological importance have been identified by nearly 100 experts from 18 organizations in Chile and Argentina. These areas are delimited along the lines of biogeographical subregions, and take into account the following characteristics: historical and present-day extent of native vegetation; the quantity and distribution of endemic species or other unique characteristics; the degree of integrity of the flora and fauna; the distribution and type of protected areas; and threats to conservation. The areas are classified into four levels of urgency for conservation, and reflect the objectives of our Vision for Biodiversity.
