Cambodia Plains

The Cambodia Plains once covered much of Indochina, boasting great herds of animals to rival the African savanna. Just 50 years ago there were strong populations of tiger (Panthera tigris), Asian elephant (Elephas maximus), kouprey (Bos sauveli), gaur (Bos gaurus), banteng (Bos javanicus), wild water buffalo (Bubalus arnee) and Eld's deer (Cervus eldii).

Following 40 years of war and guerilla activities, populations are severely depleted and vast areas of their habitat has been destroyed. However, the dry forests of the Northern Cambodia Plains sill cover large tracts of this unique landscape. Dominated by open deciduous forest, grasslands and seasonal wetlands, WWF is working on conservation projects in this precious region and is hopeful of restoring at least some of the populations to their former glory.
