Human Ways
Chimpanzees Talk

Chimps do not produce the range of sounds that humans can, so they do not ‘talk’ like humans. In captivity, however, some chimps have learned to use sign language using simple hand signals. Others have learned to communicate with their owners using symbols on a board or computer.
In the wild, chimps communicate in a variety of ways. Chimpanzees have large mobile mouths which produce a range of expressions. The ‘grin face’ with bared upper teeth may be a reaction to threat, the ‘play face’ with upper teeth hidden is perhaps an invitation to play, and the pout may be a sign of interest. All very similar to human expressions! When chimpanzees meet after a long time, they greet one another by touching or even clasping hands and kissing. They also often hold hands.
Chimp babies, like human babies, seek a reassuring touch from their mother when they are frightened.
How do I look?
Chimpanzees spend long hours gooming each other. Dirt, burrs, dried skin and ticks are plucked off their companion's coat by pinching them out with the forefingers or lips.
